7 Shows You Should be Watching on Netflix

Dexter

Crime dramas are my thing and in my mind make great TV. This one takes place in Miami, where the main character, Dexter, works as a blood spatter analysis for the Miami Metro Police Department. Besides working for the Police, Dexter also leads a secret life as a friendly and (but lovable) serial killer. He lives by a “code” and only hunts down murderers who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system.

Dexter went on for 8 seasons. In my honest opinion season 4 was by far the best season. John Lithgow (who also starred in 3rd Rock from the Sun) stars as Arthur Mitchell, or the Trinity Killer, and completely steals the show. After season 5 things slowly start to get weird. I did continue watch the show, but I was not a fan of the entire last season and I hated the way the show ended.

did you know: Michael C. Hall, the guy who plays Dexter, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during the filming of Season 4 of Dexter.

did you know: Hall was also married to his co-star Jennifer Carpenter, who played Dexter’s sister, Debra. The couple divorced after 1 year of marriage.

Sherlock title

This is, of course, a contemporary take on Sir. Aruthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. The show stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Sherlock’s sidekick, Dr. John Watson. This show is brilliantly written, but for me what takes this show to the next level is the casting. Cumberbatch plays an amazing Sherlock, and Freeman does not disappoint either. This show had me at the edge of my seat with intensity at times, and had me laughing out loud at others.

did you know: Benedict Cumberbatch is currently starring in Hamlet in London right now! In fact, my sister, who is in London right now, saw the show the other day and said Cumberbatch stole the show.

did you know: If you’re a Lord of the Rings nerd like me, you’ll recognize Martin Freeman, as Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit Trilogy.

Prison Break

Prison-Break

You know a show is good when you watch the entire series on Nexflix and then 6 months later watch it all again. Prison Break chronicles the life of main character Michael Schofield. Michael is an architectural engineer who gets in trouble with the law purposely so that he can be sentenced to the same prison where his older brother Lincoln is on death row for a crime he didn’t commit. conveniently enough Michael did all the architectural design for the prison, so he knows it like it’s printed on his skin, literally. Using his knowledge of the footprint of the building he makes a plan to break him and his brother out of the prison.

The premise of this show is hard to keep going. Once they break out of prison, where does the show go? In my honest, opinion seasons one, two, and four where awesome. Season three is where you could tell the writers weren’t sure were to take the show. By season four it was decided the show would end so the plot line had to start getting wrapped up, and thus gave the show much more direction. I was sad to see this show end, but I’m really not sure how they could have successfully kept it going and interesting.

did you know: the prison Michael and Lincoln break out of in the show is a real prison, located outside of Chicago, in Joliet, Illinois. In real life this Prison was closed in 2002, so all of the filming for the show was able to be done at the actual prison.

The Blacklist

Blacklist

James Spader is phenomenal in the roll of Raymond Reddington, a once Navy officer turned high profile criminal. Reddington, or “Red”, is on the top of the FBI’s Most Wanted List when he one day voluntarily turns himself in after eluding capture for decades. Red tells the FBI he has a list of the most dangerous and lethal criminals in the world that he has compiled over the years. In exchange for his immunity he negotiates to work with the FBI, but only with Agent Liz Kern.

The Following

Kevin Bacon plays Ryan Hardy, an FBI agent who retires after putting notorious serial killer Joe Carroll behind bars. Although Carroll is now behind bars, members of his cult or “following” successfully hatch a way to get him out of jail. Of course to add to the drama, I have to mention that while hunting down Carroll, Hardy falls in love with Carroll’s ex-wife, thus thickening the plot.

I watched season one of this show in a matter of a few days. It was absolutely mesmerizing. Season two gets a little bit weird, but in season three things are back to normal.

Breaking Bad

4_Breaking-Bad_Wallpaper-2Walter White is a high school science teacher that finds out he has lung cancer. Faced with huge medical bills and his second child on the way, Walt teams up with a former delinquent student of his, Jesse Pinkman, and starts making meth as a way to make money, and make sure his family will be financially taken care of when he passes away.

This show developed somewhat of a cult following during it’s 5 years. Not only is the acting absolutely superb, but the writing and plot development of this show are top notch as well. It’s no wonder this show won awards every year it was filming. Bryan Cranson and Aaron Paul both lit fires under their careers with their roles as Walt and Jesse.

did you know: Walt’s sketchy lawyer Saul Goodman was such a lovable character that there was a spin-off show written just about him called Better Call Saul.

Friday Night Lights

friday-night-lights

Nothing takes me back to the high school days like this show does. This series is based loosely on the movie by the same name, which is based off the book, also by the same name. You don’t need to see the movie or read to book to understand or get into this series. If t’s about a small town in Texas that is obsessed with high school football. Coach Eric Taylor, played by Kyle Chandler and his wife Tammy Taylor, played by Connie Britton, try to navigate the world of football obsessed Dillon, Texas.

did you know: when Friday Night Lights started filming in 2006, Taylor Kitsch, who played 16 year old Tim Riggins, was actually 25. Minka Kelly, who played 16 year old Lyla Garrity, and was 26.

  • Dexter is one of my all-time favorites! I also love love love Breaking Bad! And we haven’t finished watching FNL, we’ve kind of fallen off the wagon of watching it, but I love it and need to get back to it! We also watched season 1 of the Following then lost interest somewhere during the second season I think. Or maybe we watched 1 and 2? I just know that when we caught up and started watching it on TV we kind of lost interest.

    • carrie

i’m not surprised you lost interest in the second season of the following. it definitly got weird and was harder to follow for me. season three (which i don’t think is on netflix yet) was phenomenal tho!

  • YES, YES, YES to Friday Night Lights! My husband always watched it together (live, on Fri nights) while we were dating and I still think it’s the best show thats ever been on TV. Most realistic portrayal of high school AND marriage. And – my husband and I are dressing up as Coach and Tammy for a Hollywood themed Halloween party this year….ok, I’m now sounding creepy!

And – we’re about 5 episodes into Breaking Bad right now and are SO into it. Although there are some nights where we need a break from the intensity!

    • carrie

omg! i never thought of eric and tammy as a halloween costume! that’s the best thing i’ve heard all day! i’ve honestly never heard someone who’s seen FNL that didn’t like it. for me it’s usually convincing people to give it a shot. i just re-watched the entire series with my boyfriend. he was skeptical at first but of course he loved it!

  • I will check out Sherlock. I’ve heard great things!

I’ve also heard good things about Friday Night Lights. I’m not very ‘sporty’ but I think I could get past that? Thoughts?

    • carrie

yes! i think the “sporty” element won’t bother you much. it’s legitimately just a very well done show. great character developments and sub-plots. i think it’s just because i’m a wanna be southern belle, but i love the fix of southernness that it gives me too.

  • Friday Night Lights is one of my favorite shows ever.

I couldn’t get into Breaking Bad and lost interest in The Blacklist even though I adore James Spader.

I loved Dexter for a while but the sister REALLY annoyed me so I stopped watching. I might try to finish that one up though.

    • carrie

lol i have to agree that deb wasn’t my favorite character. if she annoyed you in the first couple seasons by the end of the show you’ll wanna punch her in the face.

i’m not sure if you’ve heard of the new show limitless, but the same actress who played debra plays another cop character in that show. it’s only started but so far her character is much more likable.

  • Breaking Bad is my all time favorite. I hate to admit this, but I started getting nightmares from Dexter so I had to stop watching lol.

    • carrie

lol! no shame! I’ve never had a show give me nightmares, but I could NOT watch The Following alone or at night. It would have me literally jumping at every noise or creak i would hear.

  • Unc Joe

FNL rocks, especially the episodes when football was secondary to school drama!! I liked RB Smash Williams….

    • carrie

haha! i completely agree uncle joe! i was partial to the Riggins/Lyla love affair.
