Finding Donut Heaven in New Orleans

I feel like you’re either a donut person or you’re not.

like, either you think leggings are pants or you don’t. ya know?

I have to be honest I’m really not a donut person. Never once in my life have I woken up in the morning and been like “man oh man I am really craving a donut”. Never.

Pancakes, cinnamon rolls, or bacon? Umm, yes, like daily.

But donuts I’ve always been able to take or leave. That is, until I discovered donut heaven nestled in the heart of the Garden District in New Orleans. And now I wake up dreaming of donuts.

donuts-new-orleans.jpgA while back when I started planning my trip to New Orleans I had heard that Districtย Donuts made a bacon donut. I repeat, a BACON DONUT. I was sold. I needed to stop at this place.

District rolls out 10 different types of donuts a day. Glazed, chocolate glazed and cinnamon sugar are the only ones that are made every day, the other 7 rotate out each day.

donuts-new-orleans.jpgSadly, the day I was there was not a day maple bacon was on the menu. BUT, I was able to drown my sorrows in a cookie dough, and milk & cereal donut instead.

donuts-new-orleans.jpgSome of their other rotating donut flavors I’m dying to try:

root beer float,ย blueberry cheesecake, almond joy, rum raisin, cookie dough, fluffed nutter, and of course maple bacon.

Seriously, I just became a donut person.

district-donuts-new-orleans.jpgPS- District has a great presence on Instagram and posts their donut flavors for the day each morning! Check them out here!!

Are you a donut person? what’s the craziest or best flavor donut you’ve ever had?

  • Sarah P

One of my november project friends is from New Orleans and goes there whenever she’s home. I’m always so jealous. I’m really not a doughnut person either. It’s not that I don’t like them, but they aren’t something I would go out of my way for or crave. I do want to try District Doughnuts though!

    • You would love it! even their so called “plain” donuts are divine!

  • I’m not a huge donut person either, but those sound amazing!

  • I am a FANCY donut person. I am a these types of donuts person. LOL

  • First beignets and now donuts? I like your #TravelTuesday food theme! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of Duck Donuts from OBX (but also in Virginia now), but their maple bacon donut is also amaaaazing.

    • I have been hitting the food posts hard!! haha. New Orleans has too much good food not to write about! I’ve got a few more food posts up my sleeve so i’m glad your liking them and stay tuned for more. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • i am the same as you, i could take or leave doughnuts compared to other food… except for original glazed krispy kremes, i cannot leave them easily. i think it’s because they were such a novelty at home when they finally came, and they are everywhere here so it’s hard to resist. but other doughnuts i can easily avoid. those ones look amazing and obviously i will check them out when i go back to NOLA.

    • I have to admit, I’m totally anti-chain food places, but kripsy kreme does it right!! their donuts are awesome!

  • I’m not really a donut person either, but I would wake up craving donuts everyday if I could have a cookie dough donut! Those look amazing! I’ll have to remember to check them out next time we’re in New Orleans!

    • I agree! if i lived next door to a place like this I would easily become a donut person. I can’t wait to visit again and try the maple bacon donut!

  • i’m not really a donut person either, cinnamon rolls on the other hand, yes please! ..I am really liking your NOLA posts!

    • thanks so much, Diana! I’ve got quite a few more planned so stay tuned ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Oh my, these are picture perfect! I’m not a big donut person at all, but I love the colours on these – they are really original ๐Ÿ™‚

    • they were ALMOST too beautiful to eat. food that is as pretty as it is delicious is one of my favorite things and these donuts definitely had that going on!

  • I am not a donut person either (but also ironically wrote about donuts today) but these pics are seriously tempting. Milk and cereal sounds like a unique flavor!

    • Milk and cereal was so good! the icing on the donut truly did taste like milk and of course the fruity pebbles were spot on. the cookie dough flavored donut was also pretty out of this world.

  • I am a donut person in the sense that I cannot pass by a donut box and not take one (ok, sometimes more than one). I do not necessarily crave them in the morning but my husbands brings some once in a while. A bacon donut sounds good. I have tried bacon in brownies and cupcakes and the combination works (when you think it is not going to work).

    • I’ve never tried bacon brownies, but I am a bacon enthusiast so i know i will love it! I did try dark chocolate covered bacon a few years back and it was divine!

  • I am 100% a doughnut person but they’re not really a breakfast thing here. More like a pudding or snack thing. The trouble is they’re really hard to make gluten free, so I’m trying to master them myself (with limited success). This is probably good for my waistline but makes me sad!

    • I really don’t think of them as a breakfast thing either! so much sugar in the morning makes me feel sluggish, so Im more likely to be in the mood for a doughnut as a mid-afternoon pick me up. Let me know if you master a gluten-free version!

  • Leggings are totally pants! ๐Ÿ˜‚ My dad took us to the donut shop before elementary school everyday…we stayed skinny, but he didn’t! Donuts aren’t really a big deal in Europe, so that helps me avoid them. I’ve been dying to go to New Orleans for a while, and this donut place will definitely make my list of must-do’s!

    • haha! I am 100% team leggings are pants!! my european cuisine knowledge is limited, but they tend to be more into pastries correct? still sugary and dough like, but lighter than a typical American donut correct?

      • It kind of depends on the country? Donut shops do pop up, but the ones I’ve tried tend to be too dried out. I think euro pastries may taste lighter, but there ain’t nothing light about all the butter they use! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I am definitely a donut person, although I’m pretty sure your post would have converted me if not. A bacon donut! How fast can I get to New Orleans… I had some pretty amazing ones in Florida last year too, including a salted caramel one. Frankly I’d eat anything with salted caramel on… And leggings are definitely not trousers/pants ๐Ÿ™‚ #citytripping

    • I seriously love the term trousers! haha. I also love when europeans refer to the bathroom as “the loo”, it makes me smile and wish I was European every time! I completely agree with you about caramel. dulce de leche makes me week at the knees.

  • Wander Mum

I have to say I’m not massively a donut person but I would definitely be tempted by some of these…the bacon donut in particular sounds incredible. Thanks for linking to #citytripping

    • Thanks for hosting! the other day they posted that they had a brown butter pistachio donut! the flavors they come up with are just insane!
