Florida Gulf Coast Food Guide

One of my favorite things about living in Rhode Island 2 years ago was having an abundance of amazing fresh seafood so close to me. Not surprisingly, that is also one of my favorite things about living in Florida as well.

My favorite setting for a good meal is outside on the water. Considering I was born and raised in Central Wisconsin you can see that I wouldn’t get that opportunity a lot. To say that I’m loving all the outdoor waterfront dining Florida has to offer would be an understatement. These have been some of my favorite dining experiences on the Florida Gulf Coast.

Sharky’s on the Pier — Venice, FL

Sharky’s is one of the first places we really fell in love with when we started coming to Florida. Sharky’s is literally right on the beach and as you can tell from the picture below, the view cannot be beat. The sun goes down right over the pier and it’s truly breathtaking. This place is not a hidden gem, it’s well known and always busy, be prepared to wait for a table. During the summer months they accommodate reservations, but in the busy winter months they do not.

What to order:

New England Lobster Roll – Chunky Maine lobster salad with lettuce and tomatoes served on a toasted hoagie or crescent roll.

Macadamia Grouper & Coconut Shrimp – a petite portion of grouper, baked with macadamia nut breading topped with mango colada salsa and garnished with two large coconut shrimp.

Casey Key Fish House — Casey Key, FL

During the winter months you can expect to wait (sometimes quite a while) for a table at Casey Key Fish House. The good news is there is a little outdoor bar that is right outside the restaurant and also part of the restaurant. The view is beautiful and there’s plenty of chairs to sit in while enjoying a drink or 5 if your waiting a long time for your table.

What to order:

Grouper Bites — deep-fried and severed with a tangy sauce

Any of the specials — the specials here change daily and there are always several of them to choose from. best of all, they’re all fresh off the dock.

Key Lime Pie — nothing describes Florida more than this dessert.

BrewBurgers — Venice, FL

My boyfriend and I actually stumbled upon BrewBurgers kind of by accident. Back during spring training, before we had bought our house, we were staying at the hotel directly next to BrewBurgers. We were being lazy and didn’t want to go far for dinner so we wandered next door. Now that we have a house, the drive to BrewBurgers is about 25 minutes, but when we’re in the mood for burgers this is our go to place.

What to order:

The Maddie B – bacon & berb cheeseburger served between two grilled cheese sandwiches.

The Backyard BBQ – topped with BBQ pulled pork, slaw & an onion ring on a pretzel roll.

EGGS-TRAordinary — Nokomis, FL

Another place we discovered during spring training when we were still living in a hotel. Eggs-TRAordinary is our absolute favorite place to grab breakfast. Saturdays and especially Sundays this place can get pretty busy when church crowds are getting out, but the staff does a great job and we’ve never felt uncomfortable with how busy it’s been.

What to order:

Banana Granola Pancakes — made from scratch with homemade batter and granola.

Classic Benny — classic and basic, but oh so good. (my boyfriend, who is a eggs benedict aficionado, claims this is his all time favorite benedict ever)

Crow’s Nest Marina Restaurant — Venice, FL

We went to the Crow’s Nest Marina Restaurant to celebrate my 24th birthday and had an amazing meal. Not only was our food delicious but our service was great as well. Our waiter even brought us complimentary Key Lime Pie for dessert in honor of my birthday. I have no pictures of the food, but did manage to snap a picture of the gorgeous view we looked out at while we enjoyed dinner.

what to order:

Start with wine: we ordered a bottle of S & H Selbach Riesling and it was absolutely perfect. The wine selection here is absolutely huge, and I was very intimated by looking at the menu at first. Luckily, I told our waiter what I liked and he recommended something just right.

Pan-Seared Atlantic Mahi-Mahi – two 3oz. prosciutto wrapped filets over a Greek salad with honey lime vinaigrette.

Key Lime Pie – award winning and as fresh and can be

Laishley’s Crab House — Punta Gorda, FL

The night we went to Laishley’s I actually left my phone at home so I have zero pictures from our dinner there. It’s quite a shame because not only was the food amazing, but the view is one of the best ones I’ve seen here on the Gulf Coast.

what to order:

Calamari – Lightly breaded and deep-fried, served with a sweet chili glaze

Lobster Mac & Cheese – Al dente pasta baked with a blend of cheeses and lobster meat and topped with garlic croutons.
