A few weeks ago I met Sara.
We met the old fashioned way. I stalked her on instagram and then sent her an e-mail saying, omg-i-love-your-work-pleasepleaseplease-take-some-new-head-shots-for-me-for-my-blog-rebrand-pleasepleaseplease.
A few days later we planned to meet up to chat about what I had in mind for pictures. Well it turns out we clicked instantly and ended up talking about anything and everything.
I told Sara how I always vowed to have an adult skin care regimen down pat by the time I was 25. Lets just say I’m 2 weeks from 26 and still using soap and water most of the time with the occasional mix of a generic cleanser (usually whatever is on sale at Target) if I’m feeling fancy. It’s not exactly the adult skin care regimen I had in mind.
As a teen I could get away with the bare minimum when it came to skin care. I could even sleep in my makeup repeatedly *GASP* and not see any effects from it. The truth is, those days are long gone, and they should be. Twenty-something Carrie shouldn’t be treating her skin the same way teen Carrie did.
Sara told me that she’s had very tricky and sensitive skin her entire life and over the years has tried literally everything out there with little to no success. Eventually her skin care prayers were answered when she discovered Beautycounter. She encouraged me to look into it and gave me some sample products to try. After just a few days of using Beautycounter products I could feel and see the difference in my skin.
Background on Beautycounter
The goal of Beautycounter is to get safer products into the hands of everyone.
We live in a country where we assume that our government regulates everything. Surely they make sure sketchy ingredients and harmful chemicals are kept far away from things like our food and personal care products. This is sadly not the case. Need proof? Head to your pantry or freezer and grab a can of soup or frozen pizza. Now pronounce every ingredient and tell me what it is.
The same thing goes for our personal care products. We don’t know what the ingredients are, but we assume they are only the best, because why would our government let companies make and sell us products that could be harmful to us? The reality is: companies are allowed to use harmful ingredients and make their own judgments about safety. It’s kind of scary to think about in my opinion.
Here’s the Truth
The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. Over the past two decades, the European Union has banned more than 1,300 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more in such products. The United States has only partially banned 30 to date.
This is where Beautycounter is different.
Beautycounter has banned the use of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals through their “Never List”— all while creating products that are as effective and luxurious as any other product on the market. Trust me, your skin will feel the difference!
Another plus in my book: Beautycounter is cruelty free. Meaning none of their products are tested on animals. YAY!
The Beautycounter Products I love
Nourishing Cream Cleanser
Bye bye soap and water! This baby is my new go-to daily face wash. It’s super gentle, but washes away all of my makeup and any dust and dirt my skin accumulates over the course of a long day. The best part is my skin never has that overly stripped, tight feeling it tends to have from some cleansers. Basically it takes away all the bad stuff and leaves the good stuff your body naturally produces and your skin needs to be beautiful and radiant.
Nourishing Cream Exfoliator
I found this to be very similar to the cleanser. It’s very gentle and I found it left my skin with the perfect amount of moisture after use. Unlike the cleanser, the exfoliator contains little micro-beads (they call them jojoba beads. what a name! ) that work extra hard to sweep away impurities and ditch dry skin. It’s recommended for use 2-3 times per week as a supplement to the daily cleanser.
Nourishing Night Cream
Ya’ll, did you know that it’s recommended you use different creams in the morning and at night!? Mind = Blown! Here’s the lo down: when you’re a young pup your skin naturally produces a wonderful little thing called collagen. What’s collagen? It’s a protein in your body that gives you young, smooth, radiant skin. Ever wonder why babies have the best skin ever created? Because they have collagen coming out of their ears! The sad news is our body naturally stops producing our own collagen in our mid to late-20’s (sad face). This is when we tend to notice the vibrancy from skin leaving and the wrinkles arriving. This is why when you’re a teen it’s easy to get away with using any old moisturizer. As you get older, using the right moisturizer becomes key.
Day creams tend to be light and focus on moisturizing and protecting the skin, while night creams tend to be a little bit heavier and focus on moisturizing and repairing the skin.
Nourishing Eye Cream
Again, who knew you needed special cream for your eyes?! Not this girl! One of the most common places people complain about seeing aging in their skin is around their eyes (crows feet. have ya heard of it?). Giving this area a little extra love is totally worth it! The skin around your eyes is super delicate, so it needs to be treated with a delicate product and applied carefully (with your ring finger!). My favorite part about this product is that a little bit goes a long way. Seriously, this tube will last you a while, even when using this product everyday!
I am totally not a mask person whatsoever, but this guy blew my socks off! All you do is apply the mask, let it dry for 10 minutes and then wash it all off with warm water. I felt like I could actually feel this mask working as it dried. It only got better once I rinsed it off. I swear my pores were immediately smaller! It’s recommended for use 2-3 times per week as a supplement to your daily cleanser.
If you haven’t checked out Beautycounter or haven’t heard of them, you need to check them out! I’m telling you: this stuff is the real deal. And they don’t just make amazing skin care products. They make everything from sunscreen to makeup to shampoo to baby products! Moms out there: check out their Baby Gentle All-Over Wash and Baby Calming Diaper Rash Cream!
